If you own a Gas or Electric Mains Pressure system including all heat pump systems and it is more than 4 years old, then professional maintenance of YOUR system is critical and you may need to replace your anode . You need to get your system checked for a depleted sacrificial anode or excess pressure from the failure of the pressure safety valves. 

A "sacrificial anode" stops your tank from internal rust and will only last for around 4 years. Once depleted, your hot water tank is left without any protection from rust and corrosion. Fortunately you can replace the anode every four years and extend the life of the heater dramatically giving it ongoing protection for many years. If your current Gas or Electric system fails you will need to replace it with a new one that could cost in excess of $1800!
